How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where one “word” is five characters including spaces. We count only correctly typed characters for your WPM, and show raw WPM (all characters) and accuracy separately.
What is a good typing speed?
There is no single official benchmark. Many people who type every day for work land somewhere around 40–60 WPM; competitive typists go far above 100. Accuracy matters more than speed at first — slow down until you stay above about 95%.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and return there after each key.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard.
- Practice a few minutes every day rather than one long session.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I paste?
Pasting is turned off so the test measures typing.
Does it work on phones?
It runs, but on-screen keyboards are much slower — use a physical keyboard for a fair result.
